Are Spiders Attracted to LED Lights?

As you may have experienced yourself, most bugs are attracted to light sources. This can be very annoying. You might wonder, does this also count for spiders? So I did some research to find the answer.

Are spiders attracted to LED lights? Yes. Although spiders do not like light, they are attracted by them because those lamps attract other bugs. Spiders are predators and they prey on insects and other spiders. The performance of each predator depends on its ability to locate its prey.

Despite the fact that spiders do not like light and prefer to hide out in dark places, they are attracted by lamps because any light source that might attract other bugs are a real treat for them. Even though their size doesn’t make them look like it, spiders are predators. They prey on insects and other spiders. The performance of any predator is depending on its ability to locate their prey.

In general, spiders are no big fans of light. They prefer to live in dark places. Nevertheless, their appetite, or hunting instinct you could say, wins it from their dislike of light. Considering the fact that spiders eat other small bugs, that are attracted to lights, we can say that therefore also spiders are attracted to lights. Not because of the lights but because of the food that is waiting there for them. It is the perfect hunting ground.

What Can I Do To Keep Spiders Away From My House?

If like most people, you are not a big fan of spiders, you might want to take so precautions. First of all, try to avoid hanging lights near your house, like the backyard. Spiders, being the predators that they are, will make they webs close to a light source in order to catch as many bugs as they can. They have the ability to notice the place with the best prey traffic.

If the spiders are surrounding your house, the changes of them getting inside the house are bigger. Therefore, our advice is to not use outside lighting. When for some reason it is necessary for your family to use outside lighting anyway, we want to recommend you to place them as far away from the house as possible.

Second, you might want to avoid keeping lights on in the room that you sleep at night. Unfortunately, spiders are in every house. We might not like this idea, but it is the truth. As we just learned that spiders create their webs near light sources, we shouldn’t create those places for them in the rooms that we sleep.

Another very helpful tip when it comes to our bedroom is to install some smells that spiders detest. The most famous scents that spiders do not seem to like are eucalyptus and peppermint.  They also don’t like citrus scents. The easiest way is to buy these scents in the form of a spray and adjust it around windows and doors. Lighting citronella candles can also service this purpose.

How Can I Prevent Spiders From Coming Into My Home?

You might not think about this, but spiders can enter your house by open windows or tiny holes and cracks in the wall. Therefore, it is always good to prevent this by closing all the openings as much as you can and keep the windows closed as much as possible in the spider season.

It is also possible that spiders get into the house because they hide in items that are brought into the house. Think for example about plants or storage boxes you kept in the garage for quite some time. To prevent this from happening, check these kind of items before bringing them into the house.

Something else that is important to detect for spiders are your plants. Spiders often hide in them and come out when they feel like it. Check your plants before bringing them into your home and repeat this regularly in case they decide to crawl out later.

There are different kind of house spiders. Some spiders are attracted to moisture, while other kinds prefer drier environments. But almost all spiders like to hide in dusty places. Therefore, another good advice that we can give you, keep your house clean. Make sure you vacuum your house regularly and remove spiderwebs right away when you stumble upon them.

Like mentioned before, spiders do not like the scent of eucalyptus or citrus. You might want to consider using lemon-scented cleaners for cleaning the house.

We all have items in our home that we do not use but don’t want to get rid of either. You might want to store these items for later use. While doing this, take into consideration that carton boxes are a perfect hiding place for spiders and other insects that life in your home. Instead you might want to give your preference to plastic storage boxes. It might cost you a little more to purchase these, but they will benefit you in the long term. Another plus side of plastic boxes is that you can use them multiple times. This does not only benefit you, you are also making the right choice for the environment. Good job!

What Animals Do LED Lights Attract?

Insects react differently to light. Some insects (e.g. cockroach) light deters, and others (e.g. moths) are attracted to it, even from considerable distances.

Moths attract fire from bonfires, they also fly into a candle and into a light from a bulb or fluorescent lamp. Different flies can be seen during the day on window panes, where they are attracted to the ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. When we use exterior lighting to ensure safety on driveways and around buildings, which is particularly important in urban environments, we increase the number of insects in the illuminated areas. At night, various insects are attracted to light sources, and over time you can see numerous dead insects, especially around doors and windows, which in turn increases the number of spiders and other predators. Insects attracted to buildings can invade.

The greatest danger is usually during the summer, but it can last until late autumn as long as the insects are active. Light attracts various animals to places where they are not usually found. The light attracts ants, so when the buildings are lit, they are more numerous than before. The light attracts moths to an object around which they did not exist before. Behind moths, bats appear, so these flying mammals nest more often in cities where there is plenty of food, easy to get. The light interferes with the ability of the dark to avoid bats. Near the lamp they behave as if “deaf” and “forgot” about their defensive strategy.

Some flies, moths, prostitutes, mosquitoes, ants and others, fly at night, especially during lunar night, and use light for orientation. Lighting of buildings, squares and gardens disturbs their orientation in the field and then they gather in the area, e. g. an illuminated food production plant. Streetlights and lighting of buildings affect the presence of pests and their predators and the geographical spread of pests in the urban environment. Modern lighting attracts insects very effectively. This is determined by the following factors: the brightness of the light, the colour spectrum (more ultraviolet, UV) and the heat generated from the light devices. Insects react to light from 300-400 nm (close to UV) to 600-650 nm (amber).

We use this phenomenon in light traps, i. e. insecticidal lamps that emit a lot of UV, as well as in garden lamps that shine orange, which insects no longer see or see poorly. Ordinary bulbs emit visible light into the middle UV range, but at night the blue-green component of the light attracts insects the most. Mercury lamps give a bright blue light, rich in UV. Insects react very strongly to this light. In contrast, sodium lamps produce light with a distinct yellow tint, mainly one wavelength range and a small amount of UV. Insects are not strongly attracted to this light source. Similarly with LED light that does not contain UV. Led light does not lure or threaten insects, and thus their predators.
